Song #1:

It’s All Right with Me

August 27, 1959 at 20th Century-Fox

It’s All Right with Me / C’est Magnifique

Top Choice:

•Reprise In Hollywood CD (stereo remix)

NOTES

•Recorded at 20th Century-Fox, assumedly to multi-track 35mm mag film for 70mm 6-track Todd-AO theatrical release.

•The two 1989 UK CD releases appear to use the original stereo mix, but with the right channel subtly re-panned to bring the vocal to the center.

•This is the second Capitol release in this survey, along with 1955’s “Fairy Tale,” to arguably have its best-sounding release on a Reprise CD.

Arranger/Conductor: Nelson Riddle

Original Release: Can-Can soundtrack LP, mono and stereo, March 28, 1960

Original CD Release: Can-Can, Screen Sinatra (UK), or Great Films and Shows (UK), all 1989

Top Choices, in very different flavors:

•Reprise In Hollywood CD (stereo, with vocal centered - detailed and dry, but a little cold or clinical overall)

•Original mono Can-Can LP (mono, less detailed, better blended, warmer)

Second place:

The Select Cole Porter CD -- generally good stereo mix, but with vocal off center

NOTES

•Recorded at 20th Century-Fox, assumedly to multi-track 35mm mag film for 70mm 6-track Todd-AO theatrical release.

•The two 1989 UK CD releases use the original stereo mix, but with the right channel subtly re-panned to bring the vocal to the center.  Great Films & Shows adds reverb, while Screen Sinatra does not.

•Third Capitol release in this survey to arguably have its best-sounding release on a Reprise CD.

•The remixed versions released in 1989 and later all have a brighter, harder quality to the vocal tone, which makes me wonder if they may all be sourced from the same transfer, although my strong inclination is that they are all unique stereo remixes.
