High Hopes / Love Looks So Well on You

Top Choice, stereo, but with stereo image backwards:

•1992 UK 20 Golden Greats CD (unique mastering of the 1988 remix)

Good second choice options, also with stereo image backwards:

•MFSL LP

•1989 UK Screen Sinatra CD

(both use the original stereo mix)

•1976 (SM-series) All the Way LP

•UK Sinatra Sings Cahn and Van Heusen LP

Top mono choices, even though they are fold-downs sourced from the stereo mix (See notes at right):

•1980 UK Screen Sinatra LP (Light tonality)

•1966 UK World Record Club LP #TP 570 (darker tonality)

NOTES

•The track layout on the 3-track tape, from which mono and stereo mixes were created, is:

Track One: Strings, chorus

Track Two: Sinatra

Track Three: Woodwinds, brass, percussion, rhythm section

•Clearly, this is another case of the 3-track being used primarily with mono in mind, albeit with the ability to create a somewhat wacky stereo mix (with the chorus in one channel only) when needed

•The mono mix is very heavily compressed, which is unusual for Capitol mono mixes from this time frame, and the vast majority of its masterings have been unsympathetic, sometimes in the extreme.

•The mono mix is basically awful, but original 45, tonally, is the best  of the bunch where the original mono mix is concerned, and sounds acceptable.

•The mono mastering on The Sinatra Touch may be the single worst LP mastering of any mono Sinatra mix from the Capitol era.

•The 2016 mono All the Way LP cuts off the ending very slightly, possibly in an effort to dodge tape hiss.

•Not all mono releases use the mono mix.  Some are fold-downs.

•Yet another “All the Way” stereo LP track that is mixed backwards, with strings on the wrong side (to the right).  One intriguing domestic (early N4 All the Way LP, cut from a safety tape in NYC) and two non-domestic stereo releases have corrected this.

•Capitol got a lot of mileage out of that 1988 digital remix!

Subpar:

•Most original-mix mono releases

Ultimate Sinatra - good tone, but very heavily compressed

Avoid:

The Sinatra Touch mono LP and 1986 2-CD Australian The Collection - sub-par tone; heavily compressed

The Select Sammy Cahn - heavily processed remix, reused in Complete Capitol Singles

1998 UK All the Way CD - heavily compressed; mildly right-heavy

The Works - sub-par tone; reduced stereo image

Top Choice:

•1984 Holland DMM mono LP

Second Place:

•Some original USA mono pressings (such as the D5 sampled here)

Best mastering of the mediocre stereo choices:

•1983 MFSL LP

(See NOTES at far right)

NOTES

•The track layout on the 3-track tape, from which mono and stereo mixes were created, is:

Track One: Strings, harp

Track Two: Sinatra

Track Three: Woodwinds, brass, rhythm section, percussion

•The superior, less-reverberant mono mix has yet to receive a digital release

•The original stereo mix is too soupy, in my opinion, and the 1996 remix is too dry and too processed

Arranger/Conductor: Nelson Riddle

Song #2:

Love Looks So Well On You

Subpar:

Avoid:

My Funny Valentine - bad tone and compression

Complete Capitol Singles - dry, overly-processed stereo remix
