You’ll Always Be the One I Love / If You Are but a Dream

Put Your Dreams Away (for Another Day)

Song #1:

“You’ll Always Be the One I Love”

<---- 1956 Sessions  1957 Singles:  March 14                            May 20      May 23                               Aug 13.                                   Nov. 25     Dec. 11  ----> 1958 Sessions

Top Choice, despite mild compression:

•Original “D” cut mono This Is

    Sinatra, Volume Two LP

Better dynamics, but a little too dark:

•Australian The Rarities - Volume

    One LP (mono)

Better dynamics, but a little too bright or glassy:

•1985 UK This Is Sinatra, Volume

    Two LP (mono)

Avoid:

Sinatra Hits LP, My Funny Valentine LP, and 1998 UK This is Sinatra, Volume Two CD: heavily compressed

•Japanese This is Sinatra, Volume Two LP: bloated, with rolled-off treble

The Complete Capitol Singles Collection - Norberged

•All non-mono This is Sinatra, Volume Two LPs - this track in Duophonic, even though recorded 3-track

NOTES

•Way too much processing on that stereo mix! “A” for effort; “C-” (if that) for execution

Song #2:

“If You Are but a Dream”

Top Choice, despite small audio defects, and despite another version having better tone:

•1982 This Is Sinatra, Volume Two LP #DN-16268, packaged as “A Duophonic Reissue,” but containing the stereo mix - See NOTES ---->

Second place for stereo, without defects:

•1973 The Works LP

Top mono versions, and best tone overall:

Deep in a Dream promotional CD in the Mastercard series

•2016 This is Sinatra, Volume Two LP

Subpar:

•1998 UK This is Frank Sinatra, Volume Two CD - audibly compressed

Avoid:

•Japanese This is Sinatra, Volume Two LP: Technically defective tapes used (audible swishing, high frequency loss)

Close-Up: Duophonic

NOTES

•This track is unique in the Sinatra/Capitol catalog: Available in stereo on LP, but mono-only on CD.

•The woodwinds, celeste, and harp, which are all used to very colorful effect by Nelson Riddle, are somewhat buried in the mono mix, but are clear and, frankly, rather revelatory on the stereo mix, which is why I am giving that mix the edge in this comparison, even though the better mono masterings have superior tone.

•2007’s Romance: Songs from the Heart CD appears to be a tinkered-with version of the Mastercard CD, with lessened dynamics (including clipped waveforms) and somewhat muddy EQ

•Once again, the 1985 and 1994 releases appear to stem from the same digital tapes

Song #3:

“Put Your Dreams Away (for Another Day)”

Top Choice, due to a technicality (See NOTES at right):

•1982 This is Sinatra, Volume Two LP (STEREO) - “technicality” or not, it’s a very good sounding version on its own terms

Best-sounding version, but with an un-corrected recording defect (See NOTES at right):

The Capitol Years (STEREO remix)

Top mono choice:

•2016 This is Sinatra, Volume Two LP

Subpar:

•Original This is Sinatra, Volume Two LPs and1998 UK This is Frank Sinatra, Volume Two CD - audibly compressed

Avoid:

Close-Up, Round #1, and The Works: Duophonic

NOTES

•On some stereo editions, there is an odd “thunk” in the right channel at the very beginning of the song.  Oddly, it has cropped up on three different stereo mixes:  The mix used on the 1985 UK LP and 1994 UK CD, the 1990 The Capitol Years mix, and the 2015 The Ultimate Sinatra mix, while NOT appearing on the mix that appears on 1962’s The Great Years, apparently re-used on the 1982 abridged This is Sinatra, Volume Two “Duophonic” LP, which includes this track in true stereo.  (It is possible that the 1962 and 1982 releases used a fixed/filtered version of the mix that appears unfixed/unfiltered in the 1985/1994 UK releases, which seems illogical, but I am unsure.)

The Ultimate Sinatra stereo remix is nicely done, but with a vocal that is right-heavy
