Five Hundred Guys / Jealous Lover

Top Choice:

•Japanese All the Way: The Hit Collection CD

Still Good, but a Slight Step Down:

Like Never Before LP

The Hit Maker LP

The Rarities - Volume Two LP

Avoid:

When Your Lover Has Gone LP - wet/processed tapes

Complete Capitol Singles - Norberg

NOTES

Like Never Before LP and The Hit Collection CD both involve stereo tape playback during mastering.  Like Never Before meanders slightly between being properly centered and being mildly left heavy, and has a couple of minor dropouts.

Arranger/Conductor: Nelson Riddle

Original Release: 45/78 #3423, April, 1956

Original LP Release: UK When Your Lover Has Gone, August 4, 1961

Collectors Series CD, and its assorted reuses, shown in BLUE

Very close second:

•2016 This is Sinatra, Volume Two LP

Still Good, but Compressed:

Original This is Sinatra, Volume 2 LP

Avoid:

•Japan All the Way: The Hit Collection CD, 1986 Australia The Frank Sinatra Collection CD, and 1984 Japan This is Sinatra, Volume Two LP - wet tapes (not bad sounding on its own terms, but definitely from “wet tapes”)

The Sinatra Touch mono LP; This is Frank Sinatra 1953-1957 CD; 1985 UK This is Sinatra, Volume Two LP, His 20 Greatest Hits LP - wet tapes, compressed

Golden Double 32, The Works, and The Hit Maker LPs - Duophonic

•Original 45s and EP - audibly compressed, with poor tone

•UK This is Sinatra, Volume Two CD - hard, compressed sound

Complete Capitol Singles - Norberg

NOTES

Collectors Series (reused on several other releases) is the only version that wins on all three fronts:  1.) Dynamics; 2.) Tone; 3.) Use of dry tapes.

•I suspect the 2016 LP is sourced from the Collectors Series CD or its source tape.

Above: Most releases of this song are wet, compressed, or both.  (See the lengthy “avoid” list, above.)  This comparison shows the uncompressed Collectors Series CD release, contrasted with the 1958 D9 This is Sinatra, Volume Two LP, which, while good sounding, is quite compressed by comparison.

So....what exactly is the title of this song?

While the disk was initially released as “Jealous Lover,” the memo at left, courtesy Ron Furmanek and Martin Melucci, indicates that a change was ordered three days after release.
